I was a horse fanatic. I had books with colorful photos of horses that I had memorized. I drew horses. I read the Black Stallion and Black Beauty. I had T-shirts with pictures of horses on them.
I was wearing one such tshirt when I went shopping with my mother at a store on the military base. The man at the door (who checked the military ID's) saw my tshirt and decided to test my little-girl knowledge of horses. He asked me how Arabian horses were different from other horses. I replied "Besides the dished face and being saddle-broke one year later than other foals, Arabian horses have 1 less vertebra in their back."
He was shocked. My mother was laughing.
